Ways of Protecting Brand New Veneers from Stains

Posted on 5/20/2019 by Dr. Michael Wockenfus
Ways of Protecting Brand New Veneers from StainsMany people get veneers put on their teeth because they want their teeth to look their best. Your teeth and smile are the window to the world. Though you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, people do.

There are many routes to go these days to make your teeth look their best. Some people get their teeth whitened, whether by using an over-the-counter product or by having us do it professionally for them. Other people chose to get veneers.

Veneers are a porcelain cap that fits over your teeth. Some people go that route because their teeth won't whiten properly. Others simply want a completely uniform shade of white. Whatever your reason for deciding to get veneers one thing is certain. If you don't take care of them properly, they will stain just like your natural teeth and you will be right back where you started.

How Do You Care for Them Properly?
First, you must continue your usual regimen of brushing your teeth twice a day, but be sure to use an extra soft toothbrush. Of course, you should floss at least once a day as you should be doing, whether you have veneers or not. If you use mouthwash find one that doesn't contain alcohol.

The alcohol can soften the resin that holds them on. Since most municipal water supplies contain fluoride that shouldn't be an issue, but you still have to take care of the tooth underneath the veneer. So, brush with a fluoride toothpaste. Do not use your teeth as a tool and try to avoid foods that could crack the veneer like nuts, hard candy, or even apples, unless you cut them into pieces first.

What About Teeth Stains?

Veneers can stain just like your natural teeth so avoid the same foods and beverages that will stain them. Don't drink coffee or tea with tannins. If you do rinse your mouth thoroughly after you drink it. Do not smoke tobacco. If you have further questions about taking care of your veneers, contact our office for assistance.
