Everyone deals with stress. It is a normal part of life and at times it is impossible to avoid. Stress causes your body to go through many things. It can cause a lot of different problems. While you may know the effect that stress can have on your heart, you may not know the impact it can have on your teeth. Learning about that may surprise you and may help you take steps to manage the stress in your life.A Common Reaction to StressEveryone manages stress in different ways, but one of the most common things a person does when they are under stress is to clench their teeth. It may or may not make it easier for them to manage the stress, but it can also damage their teeth. Despite the fact that teeth are strong, they are not unbreakable. Clenching down on the teeth can loosen, chip, or break teeth. You may not even realize it happened until you start to notice some of the symptoms. If you grind your teeth together during stressful times, you not only risk breaking them, you risk wearing them down. This can lead to other problems with both your teeth, gums and jaw. Other Ways Stress Impacts Oral HealthThe dangers from clenching the teeth are things that can happen quickly. There are some other ways that stress will affect your oral health that take a longer time to notice. If you are under stress because you have too much to do, you may skip following good oral hygiene habits. This can lead to tooth decay, cavities and much worse. When you are under stress you may not produce as much saliva. That can lead to a dry mouth and all the issues that come with this. The best thing you can do is find ways to manage your stress and don't overreact when in a stressful situation. Stress can also cause you to forget to eat healthy. Your teeth rely on you eating the right foods to keep them healthy. You may skip meals and you may do other things when it comes to diet that could damage your oral health.
