It is widely known that to keep teeth whiter they should be brushed daily. Why is it that your teeth turn yellow if you stop brushing though? There are many factors that can determine your enamel changing color over time and it usually comes down to day to day things.
Things That Affect The Color Of Your Teeth
Your teeth are like a canvas for food and beverages, especially for things like coffee and wine which are notorious for staining teeth with an off-putting color. If you drink coffee regularly and forget to brush, your teeth can go from white to yellow fairly quickly!
Another aspect that can affect the color of your teeth is how worn or enamel is. Your enamel is what contributes to a whiter tooth color because it covers the dentin which is a yellow layer of your tooth. This is why brushing your teeth too aggressively is counterproductive to what you are trying to accomplish; it will wear your enamel down. If you wish to keep your teeth looking healthy, gently brushing your teeth twice a day will help keep unwanted stains and yellowing away.
Another thing to note: As you age, your enamel starts getting thinner and thus it becomes harder to achieve a white appearance. This is a natural occurrence, but is also sped up by acid erosion. You can help with acid erosion by using an ADA-accepted toothpaste that specifically aims to fight this.
Whitening Your Teeth
A procedure called bleaching is done to make teeth appear ultra-white. It is not an alternative to daily brushing, but it does allow you to have a bright set of teeth very quickly. If you have a formal event, or just need to impress someone, this is an option we can provide at our location. Give us a call if you'd like to schedule an appointment.
