It really never is a very pleasant experience to have a tooth removed. This is true under just about any circumstances. But what is even worse than that is when that removal is known as a traumatic extraction, meaning that there is some other issue or complication with the tooth making it more difficult to be removed.
There are several reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Many times the cause for removal also determines whether it will be simple extraction or a traumatic extraction. A few common examples are decay, accidents, sports-related injuries or simply just having a cracked tooth which cannot be repaired. Obviously, the first priority of the dentist will be to save the tooth in any scenario, but when that is not possible extraction becomes the only option.
Swollen and Irritated Gums
In a simple extraction, the tooth can usually be wiggled and twisted until it easily vacates the socket, leaving only minor discomfort and redness. In a traumatic extraction, however, there could be a number of other issues and concerns involved. The main one, beyond the obvious irritation of the gums, is infection. You will want to be extra diligent in following the doctor's advice in caring for the recently excavated area in your mouth.
Issues With More Complicated Extractions
With a traumatic extraction, the tooth will usually have to be broken into many pieces to be removed. This makes things like infection or an impacted piece more common. In the most extreme cases, gum tissue or even partial bone fragments may have to be removed to fully access the tooth.
