Mouth Rash: Causes, Treatment, and Tips for PreventionMouth rash or perioral dermatitis is a rash that develops in and around the mouth and can take many forms. Along with dry and scaly skin, agitated skin with bumps that look like acne is also referred to as a mouth rash. Before you start treatment or a home remedy, try to determine the cause of the rash.

Causes of Mouth Rash

Usually, a rash develops as a reaction to some topical products. However, occasionally it can be an indication of a more serious underlying medical condition. Some of the most common causes are:

•  Using a flouride rich toothpaste
•  An infection in the mouth
•  Topical steroid application around the mouth
•  Hormonal changes such as those that occur during pregnancy or because of oral contraceptives
•  Allergic reaction to cosmetic products, including sunscreen, foundations, lipsticks, and moisturizers
•  Rosacea – a skin condition that requires medical treatment
•  Excessive saliva production

Mouth Rash Treatment

The best treatment for mouth rash is prevention. Keep up great oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing regularly. You should also include mouthwash in your daily oral hygiene maintenance routine.

Other tips include always conducting a patch test before using any topical medication or cosmetic product. If your skin reacts adversely to a product, stop using it immediately, wash off your skin with a gentle cleanser, and keep it clean and well-moisturized until it heals completely.

If the rash spreads or turns into cold sores or lesions, visit your doctor immediately as it can a symptom of Herpes. If the rash is accompanied by fatigue, fever or puss-filled bumps, seek medical help right away. If you think your toothpaste or other dental products may be the cause of the rash, visit your dentist for an evaluation. They can help identify how serious the issue is and provide the needed treatment.
