How Coffee Leads to So Many Dental Stains

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Dr. Michael Wockenfus
How Coffee Leads to So Many Dental StainsA cup joe is a common day opener. Coffee gets us going, and it may be part of the morning routine for some. However, what may not be known about coffee, is that it attacks our teeth and can lead to yellow or brown staining of the teeth. If it can stain the clothes or the carpet, it can also stain the teeth.

What Causes Stains?

Coffee contains tannins, which break down in water. Tannins are a type of polyphenol, and can also be found in tea and wine. Really, it is not the coffee staining your teeth, but the tannins. Tannins make color compounds stick to your teeth, and that is what may leave the yellow tint behind. Stains can be created by drinking only one cup of coffee a day. However, there are ways to prevent and avoid stains while continuing to engage in your daily kick-starter.

How to Prevent Staining

Not only can you prevent coffee stains, but there are also ways to get rid of the stains all together. Daily oral hygiene is crucial; engaging in twice daily brushing, flossing, and mouth wash. Other ways to reduce staining is to use whitening toothpaste or whitening strips. There are many new whitening techniques on the market. Be sure to look for approval by the American Dental Association (ADA) to insure that the product is safe for your teeth. Electric toothbrushes can also be more effective that traditional toothbrushes because they have more cleaning power.

Coffee is part of the daily routine for many, but just like any food and drink, there is potential for harm. If you have questions about strategies to keep your teeth white while still enjoying coffee, or you are interested in learning more, please call our office. We would love to help you stay confident in your smile.
