Why Hard Bristles Are Not Recommended for Your Toothbrush
Posted on 7/26/2021 by Dr. Michael Wockenfus
If you use a toothbrush which has hard bristles, you are likely to feel the abrasion against the enamel of your teeth. That is, if you can find them. Firm bristles, or hard bristled toothbrushes, are not common in stores these days. You can find extra soft, soft, and medium soft toothbrushes about anywhere in the world though. Generally, we do not recommend using a hard bristled toothbrush.
Benefits of Soft Bristled Toothbrushes
Soft bristled toothbrushes are gentle on your teeth. You do not want to press too hard on your gums and irritate them. A soft bristled brush is a better choice if you want to be gentle with your teeth and gums.
Since you want to find a toothbrush that will be comfortable to use at least twice a day, it is important to choose a toothbrush that is not too abrasive on your teeth. You do not have to brush hard to remove plaque. In fact, if you do brush too hard you could remove your gums! Receding gums can be caused by brushing too vigorously and too hard. Be gentle on your gums and use a soft bristle toothbrush.
When training your children to brush their teeth, it is important to consider using a soft bristled toothbrush. The soft bristles will help to get rid of any plaque without being too abrasive on their young gums.
