Bar Retained Implant Supported Dentures
Bar-retained implant supported dentures are an alternative treatment to traditional dentures. Also called bar attachment dentures, this treatment provides you with a long-term solution to tooth loss. This treatment uses dental implants to provide support for your arch of replacement teeth.
The implants are placed in your jawbone to maximize contact between the posts and the bone, which optimizes osseointegration to ensure stability. Because of this, you can avoid the need for a bone graft to restore missing bone mass. After the placement of your posts, a titanium bar is attached. Your finalized replacement teeth clip into place on this bar.
Differences Between Bar Retained Implant Supported Dentures and Regular Implants
There are a few major differences between the typical full arch restoration using dental implants and bar retained implant supported dentures. For a typical full arch restoration, 6 to 8 posts are used. Your replacement teeth are secured into place on the posts using small screws and are not removable. If you do not have enough bone mass in your jaw to support these posts, a bone graft is required first. For bar retained implant supported dentures, you only need 4. Your teeth are secured into place by clipping onto the bar. They can then be removed for cleaning each night. Because of the way the implants are placed into your jaw, you can avoid the need for a bone graft.
