Dentures—Complete and Partials

Losing your teeth is a serious issue that affects just about every aspect of your life. One of the most obvious effects of tooth loss is the impact it has on your smile. Tooth loss can also affect how well you speak and your abilities to enjoy many of your favorite foods. It can even impact your facial appearance, leading to sagging skin and formation of wrinkles. At Mid Valley Dental, we can restore the functions of your missing teeth, and your appearance, with dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss in the First Place?

You can lose teeth for some different reasons. Some of the most common causes include:
•  Periodontal, or gum, disease.
•  Facial trauma, such a car accident, a fall, or a sports injury.
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Bruxism.

What are Dentures?

The most traditional treatment for replacing missing teeth is dentures. This treatment is a removable prosthesis that consists of false teeth set into a hard base. They rest directly on your gums, relying on the soft tissue for support. Dentures have been in use for hundreds of years. They have, however, undergone many changes over the years. Modern-day dentures are much more realistic in appearance, with teeth being made from acrylic resin or even porcelain. They are designed to look less perfect, and more like your natural teeth. The base is made from acrylic and can be colored to perfectly match your gum tissues. The base can also be made to mimic the texture of gums to help provide a more realistic look.

Types of Dentures

There are two types of dentures, complete and partial. Complete dentures are what come to mind when most people think of dentures. They are designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Before taking impressions of your mouth, any unhealthy teeth that are remaining in your jaw are extracted. Your impressions are then used to create your custom dentures.

Partial dentures are similar to complete dentures in the materials they use and how they are made. However, these dentures are used to replace a section of missing teeth, allowing the healthy teeth in your arch to remain where they are. After all, there is no need to extract perfectly healthy teeth, and leaving your healthy teeth in place is beneficial for the health of your jawbone. In addition to resting your gums, partial dentures also have metal clasps, which attach to your healthy teeth. These clasps help to provide extra support for your dental restoration.

Denture Benefits

Dentures provide many benefits. These include:
•  Restoring your abilities to bite and chew. This helps to improve your digestion and nutrition.
•  Restoring your speech.
•  Improving the quality of your smile, which can also aid in boosting your confidence.

Taking Care of Your Dentures

For your dentures to function properly, it is important that you take proper care of them. Dentures should be removed and cleaned every night. Brush your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste or soap and water. Make sure to clean all surfaces of your dentures, including around any metal clasps. After cleaning them, set them in a glass of water or denture cleaning solution to soak overnight while you sleep. Before going to bed, be sure to brush your healthy teeth, your gums, and your intraoral tissues. By taking proper care of your dentures, you can help to maintain the health of your mouth as well as the functionality of your dentures.

Dentures help to restore many of the functions of your missing teeth. Moreover, new advancements in dentures make them appear much more natural. If you have suffered tooth loss, call Mid Valley Dental at (920) 215-4160 today to find out if dentures are right for you.
